Sharing Space with the Other to Discuss Mathematics Education and Social Justice
Chorney, Sean; Noble, Tanya; Ruttenberg-Rozen, Robyn; Phakeng, Mamokgethi Setati
For the Learning of Mathematics, v36 n3 p46-49 2016
This article interweaves the voices of four participants attending a Working group at the Canadian Mathematics Education Study group on the theme of social justice in 2015. The theme that emerged was learning to meet "the other" in the working group; however, interactions were not straight-forward. This article presents the reflections of the experiences of the four participants, arguing that to achieve social justice it is essential to accept "the other", honour their voices and create authentic relationships. The participants conclude that social justice is based in recursivity and becoming.
