Problem and Purpose: A review of the literature revealed that college non-student athletes and student-athletes experience stress during their college years but do not always have the appropriate coping behaviors to manage the stress. The purpose of this descriptive, cross-sectional, non-experimental study was to determine the stress coping behaviors of college non-student athletes versus student-athletes. Method: Sixty-one non-student athletes and 71 student-athletes from a faith-based college completed a questionnaire assessing both positive and negative coping behaviors. Selye's general adaptation model-theory of stress was used to guide the study. Results: The data results identified the most frequently used coping mechanisms among these two population groups. Non-student athletes identified listening to music, socializing with friends, and family as their most frequently used coping mechanisms. Student-athletes identified that they mainly used exercise to cope with stress. Both groups of students denied drinking alcohol, smoking, and sexual activity to cope with the stress associated with college life, which was expected in this faith-based organization.
