Donaldson, Wayne; Bass, Michael – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Describes three experiments conducted to examine the superior retention of related word pairs when the second word in the pair required active construction by the subject. The results confirm the importance of subjects' checking solution adequacy and of associative relationships in recall. (PMJ)

Buschke, Herman; Schaier, Aron H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
A study used two-dimensional recall to identify the units of recall in the process of remembering, in order to investigate the correspondence of experimentally identified memory units to theoretically defined propositional units, and the correspondence of recall organization to story schema. (Author/AM)

Roediger, Henry L., III; Tulving, Endel – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Three experiments are reported in which, following presentation of a categorized list, subjects either recalled the whole list or a part of the list. Results indicate that it is difficult to retrieve selectively parts of a studied list when instructions specify only what not to recall. (Author/AM)

Bower, Gordon H.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
In experiments where hypnotized subjects learned one word list while happy or sad, retention proved to be surprisingly independent of the congruence of learning and testing moods. Learning mood provided a helpful retrieval cue and differentiating context only where subjects learned two word lists, one while happy, one while sad. (EJS)

Rubin, David C. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Four stories were divided into function word units; a dozen variables were all found to be statistically significant predictors of recall. For the more structured stories, subjects' intuitions, gist, and redundancy were the best predictors; for the less structured stories, serial position and repetition were best. (EJS)

Hunt, R. Reed; Einstein, Gilles O. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Presents argument that many factors affecting retention can be understood in context of a distinction between relational and individual item processing. Describes experiments which demonstrate that variables influencing the type of processing produce differential effects upon certain dependent measures. (Author/BK)

Layton, Pamela; Simpson, Adrian J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Subjects read sets of active or passive sentences, and an active or passive question was asked about one. Errors were compared. Results suggest that surface form of a single sentence is retained; surface and deep structures are retained for two, and only deep structures of four and eight sentences. (CHK)
