Abstract:
Describes a study that evaluated the determinants of price increases of scientific journals over time from a variety of publishers, disciplines, and countries. It was found that inflation and greater journal length explained most price increases, and that journal prices from commercial publishers increased much more rapidly than those from nonprofit publishers. This document represents a substantial attempt to survey the literature of labor negotiations as it relates to the faculty in higher education. Works are included that provide a history of collective bargaining in the U.S. and the evaluation of the laws governing labor relations. The pros and cons on the applicability of various bargaining concepts to public employees can only be understood if the entire development of labor relations is known. Other works focus on concrete proposals for collective bargaining episodes and alternative methods of attaining the goals sought through professional negotiations.
