Abstract:This exercise is designed to illustrate the concept of a region and, more specifically, the subconcept of regionalization by involving students in working with facts and statistics available in the "Statistical Abstract of the United States" (U.S. Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce 1971, 2001). The exercise supports the national geography standards wherein it is stated that "understanding the idea of region and the process of regionalization is fundamental to being geographically informed" (Geography Education Standards Project 1994, 70). This exercise also introduces high school students to the process of regionalizing and requires them to use their analysis to complete the process with a generalization--a line on a map defining the extent of an agricultural region. Using similar data for 1999, the exercise concludes the study with a brief examination of changes that the data indicate has occurred in less than thirty years. (Contains 4 tables and 2 figures.)
