The concept of interdisciplinarity (the integration of concepts and methods of teaching and research) is analyzed in this report. The impact of interdisciplinarity on university teaching and research adapted to social change is examined, and it is concluded that although "disciplines" need not be abolished, they should be taught in the context of their dynamic interrelationships and societal problems. The first part of the report analyzes information obtained from a selective survey of interdisciplinary institutes and universities in twelve countries. The second part "Terminology and Concepts" includes papers by Heckhausen, Boisot, Jantsch, Lichnerowicz, and Piaget, who consider aspects of "discipline" and "interdisciplinarity" within the context of developing scientific knowledge in industrial society. Apostel then synthesizes these contributions and discusses an operational approach to interdisciplinarity conceptualization. The final part considers the problems, and possible solutions, posed for institutional structure, curricula, and teaching methods and training by the introduction of interdisciplinary studies in universities. Descriptions of a number of universities teaching interdisciplinary courses are used throughout to illustrate the report.
