Abstract:	In fall 1999, the Provost of the State University of New York (SUNY) established the Provost's Advisory Task Force on the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes and charged it with examining and discussing the issues involved in implementing undergraduate student learning outcomes assessment in the context of the large and diverse university system and making recommendations for assessing student outcomes and intellectual growth in General Education and the major subject. This report discusses the principles underlying sound assessment developed by the American Association of Higher Education and the SUNY principles of good practice. Recommendations are provided for campus-wide assessment and the use and reporting of assessment results. Assessment practices are also outlined for the major. The Task Force recommendations for actualizing the SUNY Assessment Initiative are outlined. Seven appendixes provide background information about the development of the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes. (SLD)
