Abstract:
This survey of vocational English as a second language (ESL) for adult learners covers the following areas: (1) language content (pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, style and conversational strategies, literacy training, motivation); (2) program design, including a variety of program models; and (3) materials development (needs assessment, material adaptation and creation, curriculum development, syllabus design, field testing and evaluation). Chapters are devoted to an overview of the status of vocational ESL programs, a discussion of research needs in vocational ESL, and a summary of characteristics of successful programs. Two sample supplementary lessons are appended, and a lengthy annotated bibliography completes the document. (JB)
