State Snapshots of NAEP Science Performance Now Available in ERIC

Feb. 16, 2011

 Back to ERIC News

Results of the science assessment from the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) were released by the National Center for Education Statistics in late January. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Department of Defense schools volunteered to participate and contributed to results for the nation at grades 4 and 8. Forty-six states and the Department of Defense schools had sufficient participation to report results separately for grades 4 and 8. These 47 states/ jurisdictions are all referred to as "states" in the summary of results.

Each participating state and jurisdiction received a one-page snapshot report for each grade level that presented key findings in a condensed format. These reports have been added to ERIC and are available through a pre-established search.

Within each state report, the overall scale score and achievement-level results are provided, in addition to student group results. Bulleted text describes overall student results, bar charts show NAEP achievement levels, and tables display results by gender, race/ethnicity, and eligibility for free/reduced-price lunch. In addition, bulleted text describes average scale score gaps for gender, race/ethnicity, and eligibility for free/reduced-price lunch. A map comparing the average score in 2009 to other states/jurisdictions is also displayed.

The search button below runs an ERIC search that returns a list of state snapshots from NCES. The Search Criteria section appears above the list of records; to find results from a specific state, enter the state name and select Search. Records for grade 4 and grade 8 for that state will be retrieved. The ERIC citation for each report includes a PDF icon that links to the full text.
