The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) First Look report on Public School Graduates and Dropouts from the Common Core of Data: School Year 2009-10, is now available in full text in ERIC. The report presents the latest release of the Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate (AFGR) and the Event Dropout Rate disaggregated by year, race/ethnicity, gender, and, where applicable, grade.

Report findings show that 78 percent of high school students, nationwide, graduated on time; an increase of 2 percentage points from the previous year. This graduation rate is based on the AFGR, which is calculated from enrollment and graduation counts reported to the National Center for Education Statistics at the Institute of Education Sciences, part of the U.S. Department of Education.

The National Center for Education Statistics is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education. For more information about the NCES and its work, visit http://nces.ed.gov.
