Abstract:This compilation provides an introduction to using scoring rubrics in the classroom. When good rubrics are used well, teachers and students receive extensive feedback on the quality and quantity of student learning. When scoring rubrics are used in large-scale assessment, technical questions related to interrater reliability tend to dominate the literature. At the classroom level, concerns tend to center around how, when, and why to use scoring rubrics. The collection contains these chapters: (1) "Implementing Performance Assessment in the Classroom" (Amy Brualdi); (2) "An Introduction to Performance Assessment Scoring Rubrics" (Carole Perlman); (3) "Rubrics, Scoring Guides, and Performance Criteria" (Judith Arter); (4) "Scoring Rubric Development: Validity and Reliability" (Barbara M. Moskal and Jon A. Leydens); (5) "Converting Rubric Scores to Letter Grades" (Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory); (6) "Phantom of the Rubric or Scary Stories from the Classroom" (Joan James, Barb Deshler, Cleta Booth, and Jane Wade); (7) "Creating Rubrics through Negotiable Contracting" (Andi Stix); (8) "Designing Scoring Rubrics for Your Classroom" (Craig A. Mertler); and (9) "Scoring Rubrics Resources and Review" (Carol Boston). (Contains 11 tables, 9 figures, and 60 references.) (SLD)
