Abstract:This booklet offers guidance for increasing the dissemination and utilization of information (especially federally funded disability research) through development of user-friendly materials and alternate formats. Individual sections address: the distinction between alternate formats and accessibility, suggested policies to help define approaches to accessibility, development of an organizational dissemination policy, suggested questions to guide format selection, and implementation of a variety of formats and modes including large print, audiotape, Braille, diskette, CD-ROM/DVD, video and descriptive video, captions, and Internet/World Wide Web. Also discussed are other format concerns, the importance of "people first" terminology, and evaluating for user friendliness. A brief report of a consumer survey is reported indicating increasing numbers of individuals with disabilities are turning to the computer as an information source, although printed materials remain the most preferred format.
