Abstract:This handbook shares some practical and conceptual knowledge about gangs in schools and suggests some strategies for coping with gang problems in schools. A radical approach is proposed which advocates assimilating gangs into the fabric of daily school life. The strategies were derived from two formal studies conducted from 1982 to 1990 on Los Angeles school campuses. Data were collected from 100 incidental contacts and informal conversations, 64 structured interviews with students and adults, visits to 5 major campuses, and a review of current literature and research. Chapter 1 discusses the critical consequences of denial of the gang problem and outlines elements necessary for appropriate action. Chapter 2 discusses gang characteristics, mentality, the benefits of membership, an evolutionary process of becoming a gang member, and gang behaviors and activities. The third chapter describes the need for schools to establish a philosophy and action plan, create a support team, and conduct an ongoing evaluation of program operations. The preventive, positive, and proactive elements of a radical approach--including both immediate and gradual strategies--are outlined in the fourth chapter. The final chapter discusses the asocial and alluring nature of gangs, describes a process of assimilation, and suggests ways to develop and cultivate a positive leadership style. One table, a sample questionnaire, and a 10-item annotated bibliography are included. (Contains 28 references.) (LMI)
