| Abstract: | Compiled from interviews with personnel in pulmonary function testing (PFT) laboratories in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, this competency-based curriculum guide is intended to provide a knowledge of PFT for persons who provide respiratory care. The guide contains 20 sections covering the following topics: vital capacity, flow measurements, spirometry, residual volume, arterial blood gases, diffusion testing (single breath and steady state), closing volume (delta nitrogen), flow-volume loops, volumes of isoflow, mechanics testing, p50 measurements, Fick cardiac output and respiratory quotient, VD/VT, oxygen and carbon dioxide response, occlusion pressures, computerization, methylcholine (allergen challenging), sleep apnea testing, and pulmonary stress testing. Each section contains objectives, a prespective on the procedure equipment and subject preparation, calculations, and self-checking questions. Answers to the questions are found at the back of the guide, along with normal test levels and references. (KC) |
