| Abstract: | As part of a series of studies on the concerns and aspirations of American teachers, this report illustrates the concerns of teachers, students, and law enforcement officers about the increasing violence and fears of violence in U.S. schools. The survey is based on interviews with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 teachers from grades 3 through 12, 1,180 students from the same grades, and 100 police department officials. Teachers generally felt safe in the schools, but only 50% of students felt very safe, and 22% were somewhat worried or very worried about being hurt at school. Law enforcement officials were more likely than teachers or students to feel that school violence has increased. All three target groups thought that violence was most likely outside the school building. Most teachers (61%) and law enforcement officials (60%) thought that certain types of students, especially low-income and minority students, were more likely to become victims of violence. Eleven percent of teachers said that they had been victims of violence in school, and 23% of students reported being victims of violence in or around school. However, only 14% of teachers and 26% of students thought that school efforts to control violence have been less than adequate.
