| Abstract: | Results are presented of a survey of 500 teachers in New York who were asked their opinions on public education in the state. A summary of findings provides information about teachers' opinions on: (1) emphasis on basic skills; (2) school discipline and safety; (3) extension of school day or year; (4) teacher apprenticeships; (5) career ladders and teacher testing; (6) monitoring of teacher performance; (7) standards for merit pay; (8) vouchers and tuition tax credits; (9) public attitudes toward teachers; (10) teacher salaries; (11) school administration and funding; (12) parent and community support; (13) student attitudes; (14) teacher qualifications; (15) overall quality of the public schools; (16) instructional materials and facilities; and (17) job satisfaction.
